Just when it looked like City SC was headed for yet another tie, a bad bounce in the box led to a penalty kick that sent City SC to its first loss of the season, a 3-1 defeat by Real Salt Lake on Saturday night in Sandy, Utah.
Chris Durkin played a ball in the penalty area off his knee, but it came up and caught his arm, and referee Drew Fischer immediately signaled for a PK. The play was looked at by the VAR official and confirmed and Chicho Arango took the shot, taking a slow approach that got Roman Burki diving to his right while Arango rolled it to his left for the goal in the 84th minute.
It was the second goal of the game for Arango, and he got a third in the first of 13 minutes of stoppage time to pretty much seal the win.
City SC led for most of the game after a goal by Indiana Vassilev in the third minute. The loss is the first of the season for City SC after going unbeaten in its first five games, though with only one win and four ties. The team’s five-game unbeaten streak is now over, replaced by a four-game winless streak. City SC was one of two unbeaten teams that suffered their first loss on Saturday.

Vassilev scored in the third minute – and only seconds into that third minute – from a tight angle on the right side. He tracked down a long ball near the sideline, dribbled it into the box, backing up his defender with some stepovers. Once into the box, he shot with his left foot into the far side of the net, past a stationary Zac MacMath.
It’s just the third goal for Vassilev in his one-plus seasons with City SC. He had two in one game last season, the first meeting with Sporting Kansas City. He had five goals in his two seasons with Inter Miami before City SC claimed him in the expansion draft.
Vassilev has been playing with a brace on his right wrist to protect a broken bone suffered in the first Champions Cup game with Houston. The cast is off but he still needs to keep it covered during games.
When City SC got a 1-0 lead last week against D.C. United, it lasted just over a minute before D.C. got even. This time, City SC made it to halftime, though RSL had some chances. A goal was called back for offsides and some other chances were wiped out by some nice recoveries, notably by Tim Parker.
Parker returned to the lineup after missing two games with a tight back, playing alongside Josh Yaro, who was starting in place of Joakim Nilsson, who is out with a rib injury.
But the lead didn’t last forever, though it took an exceptional play for it to happen. In the 70th minute, Arango got the ball with his back to the goal a few yards from the top of the box. He turned and without looking laced a shot that Burki had little time to react to and his dive to his left allowed him to get only his fingertips on the ball. Burki slammed the turf in frustration as the ball went in.
The goal came just minutes after City SC coach Bradley Carnell made his first subs of the game, taking out Tomas Totland, who had been shaken up shortly before defending corner kick, and Vassilev for Kyle Hiebert and Samuel Adeniran. City SC made two more subs in the 72nd minute, bringing on Rasmus Alm for Klauss, who was checked for a concussion earlier in the second half, and Tomas Ostrak for Aziel Jackson.
City SC beat writer Tom Timmermann and Beth O’Malley discuss what has become the norm for City SC this season: A tie game. Yes, they’re better than losses, but Saturday’s tie with D.C. United was a good chance for three points that was missed.
