As a Democrat, I voted for former Republican Sen. John Danforth. I trusted him. I agreed with his statement in the editorial "How do you salvage a spiraling political party? One statesman's thoughts." (Oct. 6) that the Republican Party has “been thrown overboard by MAGA.â€
But Danforth's support of third-party candidate Jared Young reminds me of why some of Danforth’s previous endorsements for various characters have been terrible for Missouri and the country.
With Danforth’s backing, we got the corrupt Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court, a man who has taken millions of unreported dollars from his right wing cronies, and whose wife supported the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

With Danforth’s backing, Missouri and the country got Josh Hawley, a senator who openly abetted that insurrection, even while running for his safety against the very rioters he egged on.
So Danforth is at least zero for two in his endorsements. So bad was his Hawley endorsement that he says he regrets making it.
Now he’s asking us to vote for Young against Hawley. But by backing Young, while saying he will never vote for Donald Trump, Danforth is effectively casting votes for Trump and Hawley to keep his “Republican cred.†That sounds like party over country.
I suspect that one day Danforth will come crawling back with another apology for a wrong-headed choice. And this time the choice is clear: dictatorship or democracy. In this election, we must choose Lucas Kunce.
