Within days, dirt will fly as construction begins on the first part of a $10 million project to build apartments and townhomes in St. Louis' Shaw neighborhood.
Brent Crittenden, chief executive and managing principal of Urban Improvement Co., said he completed financing Friday with Midwest Regional Bank on the project's $5 million first phase. Planned are 36 apartments in a new three-story building and four apartments in a vacant flat that will be renovated.
UIC plans a second phase of 24 apartments and eight for-sale townhomes.
Crittenden said he hopes the first-phase apartments will be ready for tenants by late this summer.
The apartment project's site of vacant lots is in the 4100 block of DeTonty Street along the south side of Interstate 44. UIC initially proposed a project of 16 contemporary bungalows and pedestrian courtyards. As it turned out, no one wanted to buy a bungalow next to a busy freeway.

As result, UIC pivoted to recast the project as apartments and townhomes. Crittenden has said the buildings are designed and will be built to minimize traffic noise audible to residents.
