U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt arrives to the Missouri GOP Get Out to Vote tour stop to speak to members of the press and general public on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield.
Eric Schmitt didn’t grab the nomination for U.S. attorney general, but the junior U.S. senator from Missouri did land with a new group that vows to work with President-elect Donald Trump’s administration on cutting government costs.
The group is led by a lawmaker from one of Missouri’s neighbors, U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.
During her time in the Senate, Ernst “exposed levels of (fiscal) abuse that are almost too insane to believe,†she told the media last week.
Schmitt will be in some strong company, at least as far as high-profile Republican senators are concerned: The committee also includes Ted Cruz and John Cornyn of Texas; Mike Lee of Utah; Roger Marshall of Kansas; and Rick Scott of Florida.
The group will work with two of Trump’s closest allies, former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and tech billionaire Elon Musk, as part of Trump’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

Ernst already has to the pair last week that outlines about $1 trillion in cost cuts, involving 22 separate areas of operations.
Aside from landing the new gig, Schmitt also spent time last week stumping for, , Trump’s proposed Cabinet nominations.
Along with telling NBC’s “Meet the Press†that he will support Pam Bondi for attorney general and Pete Hegseth for secretary of defense, he also stood up for former U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s nominee for director of national intelligence.
At issue was a recent statement by former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who referred to Army veteran Gabbard as a Russian “sympathizer.â€
Schmitt called Haley’s statement “totally ridiculous. It’s a slur, quite frankly. She’s served this country honorably,†said Schmitt, who said he would also vote for Gabbard’s nomination.Â
